Claimed Free Alan Wake Remastered From Xbox Store Now Being Revoked

Xbox is revoking some Alan Wake Remastered copies which were claimed for free earlier this year. Is yours safe?

Earlier this year, some Xbox players found a way to claim Alan Wake Remastered for free just by redeeming the free trial for Alan Wake 2. Naturally, many gamers took advantage of this, quickly adding the remastered title to their libraries.

While some players got to fully enjoy and finish the game for free, others who hadn’t finished it yet are now out of luck as Xbox has officially revoked these copies.

Xbox Revokes Free Alan Wake Remastered Copies

Today, Xbox is taking back copies of Alan Wake Remastered that were obtained through the free trial loophole. Users who had claimed it this way received a notice from Xbox stating:

“You recently acquired a version of Alan Wake Remastered that was not intended to be available. Therefore, we are canceling your order, refunding any payments made, and removing it from your “My games & apps” list. We apologize for the inconvenience.”

The revocation only applies to those who obtained Alan Wake Remastered without purchasing Alan Wake 2. Players who legitimately bought Alan Wake 2 and claimed their remastered copy still retain access to the game.

To be fair to Xbox, it took over a month to revoke these unintended free copies, which meant plenty of players got the chance to play through the game for free before losing access. Whether that was intentional or not, no one really knows.
