Wartales is an open-world turn-based strategy game developed by French studio Shiro Games. Play as a group of amoral characters, mercenaries, and bandits trying to make a living in a harsh world where honor means nothing anymore. Wartales is a tactical turn-based RPG set in a medieval world. Players control a band of mercenaries and take varied contracts to make money. Each member has different skill sets, specializations and personalities and new ones can be recruited along the journey. The group camp can be upgraded with tools and luxuries to help the members recover from difficult battles. The world is vast with many different places to explore and quests to take on. The combat requires a bit of strategy as different enemies might be weaker to a different combination of characters. The game supports coop of up to 4 players.
Wartales is a rpg game, based on the classic formula of the genre, from the french indie team of Shiro Games, which in about a year managed to get the game out of the early access period in order to launch it officially. If you ever played title similar to Wasteland 2, you'll have a rough idea how Wartales works, at least on the surface level. Much like the aforementione game, in Wartales we'll take control of a band of mercenary seeking glory and fame across the medieval like land of the game. Set a hundred years after the fall of the Edoran Empire , caused by a plague infesting the nation, you'll set to a journey gathering members, exploring ruins, completing contracts with the goal of enrich yourself, but also survive in this harsh world. With a deep survival system as its core, Wartales while flexible with the game options, is still a pretty interesting title for the genre. Not only we'll have to take care of the early grinding for contracts, while getting stronger and accumulate resources. We'll also have to take care of party relationship, which in worst case could lead into a team member leaving or even backstabbing us, but in a well balanced scenario could lead into deep friendship (with eventual party perks) and even romantic relationship among members. But beware that death exist and if a party member falls, he won't be able to come back, thus taking care of their equipment is also vital. As said equipment can be damaged severely during a fight, as the armor provide the first barrier against enemy attacks, which will directly hit each unit health bar if the armor get heavily damage, resulting in wounds that could lead to serious injuries and death if left uncured. Sicknesses exist, like the plague, thus managing the health and happiness of the band is important. Gameplay will work as a turn based one, where each turn our team can execute certain actions, but in case of a direct engagement said unit must disengage before being able to move, leaving a chance to the enemy to strike a hit. By performing certain actions over the course of the fight, units will receive Valor points which can be used to perform special skills and attack. Also important is the Fame points, which along with the Fame system will allow us to unlock new contracts, missions but also attract new mercenaries which can be hired to expand our band of mercenary. Wartales is thus a pretty standard rpg on the surface, but in reality offers a pretty deep survival and management system, which is further expanded the more we progress into the game. Moreover thanks to the co-op mode, it could also be an interesting experience to paly with friends, for less than 20€ here on AKS!
