Trials of Mana is a role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix. The monsters of destruction, the eight Benevodons have wrapped the world in darkness. The Goddess of Mana, using the Sword of Mana was able to seal the monsters inside the eight Mana Stones. However, that used up all her energy which changed her into a tree and has put her in a state of deep sleep for several years. The evil forces are still at large and are determined to free the eight Benevodons. They even started a war because of this. It is a time of sorrow as peace is coming to an end and the Mana Tree is slowly withering away.

• Experience once again the hit Japanese classic RPG but this time fully modernized with full 3D graphics, rebuilt from the ground up, an upgraded battle system, a remastered soundtrack, extra conversation, character voices, and more.
• Choose your team of three from your six available companions. The combination that you pick will determine the story that you will get.
• Level up your character to reach top-level classes. Choose from either light or dark classes and your character’s appearance, magic, and special attacks will change depending on your choice.

Trials of Mana reworks the classic tale of the Mana Sword into something that feels completely fresh. Even if you already know the story beats by heart, this is a remake worth considering.

And yet, it still goes well above and beyond what was strictly necessary for a remake. This is a game that feels decidedly modern and could (and should) appeal to a much broader audience than “existing Trials of Mana” fans. If the lengths that Square Enix has gone to with this remake prove to resonate, then dare I hope for the same treatment to Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI?

There’s plenty here to explore with one campaign taking me around 20 hours to complete, with things to do that I missed, which had me jumping right back in for more. Sure, there’s some issue with the AI companions, but Trials of Mana is an adventure worth going on, and you’ll be thrilled that you did.
