Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate is a hilarious game when it comes to both its joke-filled dialogue and gameplay premise. It’s essentially a roguelike where you move a black king around a chess board yet you’re equipped with a shotgun that you can use to blast the white playing pieces away. To be honest, I’m not all that familiar with chess so it took me a while to memorize how each piece can move but once I did, I found Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate to be a highly strategic roguelike despite its super-silly premise.

Shotgun King will put a lot of people off. However, if you like chess and rogue-based games it is well worth a bash. I adored its presentation, it reminded me of games from my youth, yes, I am that old. Pairing one of the oldest games on the planet with rogue-lite elements works far better than it has rights to and Shotgun King is truly unlike anything else I have played.
