Need For Speed Unbound, a new entry in the legendary road racing series, is also a problematic title for the series. In fact, despite the good underlying ideas, Unbound remains a sterile game with little focus.
While the comic.like graphic style is subjective, there’s litte care in the models and details, and it takes a turn for the worse with a really bland and poorly written story, as well as an annoying gameplay as being constantly hunted down by the police after a mission etc.
Need For Speed Unbound is the most recent installment in the NFS franchise and shares many similarities to the previous title while bringing some new anime-style visuals and effects. You get to collect different cars, tune them and participate in different types of races to earn money and reputation. Police will pursue you often filling the high speed races with even more adrenaline.
Having played Need for Speed Unbound, I find it to be a solid addition to the long-running franchise. While the game stays true to the fundamentals of its predecessor, Need for Speed Heat, it manages to inject some fresh elements into the mix.
The return of Criterion Games as the developer brings a sense of excitement, but it’s worth noting that Unbound doesn’t stray too far from Heat’s foundation. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as Heat reinvigorated the series with its engaging gameplay. However, it’s somewhat surprising considering Criterion’s history of having a distinct style.
One notable aspect of Unbound is its new animated characters and special effects. The juxtaposition between the traditional graphics and cartoon-inspired flourishes may seem odd at first, but they are executed remarkably well. The bold and striking visuals make the game instantly recognizable and stand out within the franchise’s long history.
