Mafia II is an open-world action-adventure game developed by Hangar 13 and D3T the second game in the remastered trilogy step into the shoes of War hero Vito Scaletta as he becomes entangled with the mob hoping to pay off his father’s debts, prove yourself to the family by tackling jobs of bigger and bigger significance, but be careful large rewards means bigger consequences.
The story pulls no punches, neither glorifying nor demeaning the difficult lives its protagonists lead–just presenting them with brutal honesty and letting you reach your own conclusions. After the 15-or-so hours it might take you to gun through Vito’s story, it’s hard not to come away with the sense that there should have been more to do in this beautiful city. Yet while you might be disappointed with what Mafia II doesn’t do, it’s hard to be disappointed by what this excellent game does do: deliver fun shoot-outs and pockets of shocking brutality in a world you’re delighted to be a part of.
In conclusion, Mafia II transcends the original game and what was a rather 2D experience in the original has now been turned into a fully interactive, almost 3D experience. Vito is a charmer and is perfectly created for the game which makes you want to finish the game in order to see how the story finishes. It should take most gamers a good 12 – 15 hours to successfully complete and if they put in some more freedom, this game could almost have become the GTA killer. Nonetheless, it’s a well-made title that is oozing with enjoyment but in terms of replay value, it’s just a one-play game. Recommended!
It may not have as much sand in its sandbox as Grand Theft Auto or the diversity or even the longevity (unless you like scouring the map for posters and Playboy centerfolds), but it has a strong story and story is what 2k Czech decided to focus on. Overall, it pays off. Mafia II is a fulfilling mob tale, and you will want to play it to the end. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you about the finale.
