About this game

A game of deceit and survival. The ship carrying eight explorers navigates the harsh Arctic. Two traitors within the team invoke dark forces to bring about their downfall.

• In the harsh and unforgiving Canadian Arctic, one must build fires to stay warm, ward off wolves and other predators, and hunt for food to survive.
• Feed them poisoned food, entice animals to attack them, curse them with blood magic, or if all else fails, shoot them in the back.
• You’ll have to make some difficult decisions to keep fed in the Arctic. Kill them, then use their remains as food or weapons.
• Navigate a warship from the 19th century around (or into) icebergs. Find coal to feed the ship’s ever ravenous boiler.
• The expedition will need to prepare for a full day and night cycle, deal with unforeseen whiteouts, and try to escape a major blizzard that is forecast to approach.

Dread Hunger is marketed as far more… well, dreadful… than it actually is; instead of being forced into a psychologically tense situation with 7 other strangers, I found myself laughing at the ridiculous situations we consistently ended up in. White the Northwest Passage may be frigid, players can slowly warm up to Dread Hunger and all it has to offer with addicting gameplay that’ll make it hard to stop even after playing the day away. No longer do Frostpunk and Among Us pass silently through the night; Dread Hunger mixes elements of both together that’ll have even the pickiest of players come aboard.

With a game like Dread Hunger, some may feel that this death system hinders the core objective of the Thralls, while others may feel that it forces them to be more creative in dealing with other players and focus on turning the crew against each other rather than rely on brute force. Similarly, the crew may feel like there is too much to keep track of or they may feel like the gameplay loop is encouraging and rewards creativity. Ultimately, Dread Hunger is truly a well-thought-out and brutal game that feels novel in its execution, but its difficulty and gameplay loop may not be for everyone.
