Borderlands 4 - The Announcement, Release Date and Breakdown of the Teaser

To great surprise at the Opening Night Live of Gamescom 2024, 2K released a teaser for the new Borderlands 4. The fourth main installment in the series, with a teaser that hides more than it seems. But most importantly, an unexpected release date for fans of the series.

Borderlands 4 – Revealed at ONL of Gamescom and the Release Date

During the Opening Night Live of Gamescom on 20th August, we had a pleasant surprise with a teaser for Borderlands 4. The next entry in the famous looter shooter series by Gearbox. A trailer with a cinematic cut that uses a much more realistic visual style, at least from what we’ve seen. Ending with a release date expected for 2025, and it appears to be confirming the release only on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Borderlands 4 – Analysis of teaser information

The short 1-minute and a half trailer for Borderlands 4 does hide some information that won’t have escaped fans of the series. The teaser begins with Lilith’s iconic Firehawk, and what seems to be Pandora’s Moon, Elpis, following the events of Borderlands 3. It seems that Elpis comes into contact with some sort of barrier, causing a rain of meteors onto an unnamed planet. Which are revealed to be the iconic Psycho masks, and a robotic hand picking one up. Revealing some glitched images and then the Borderlands 4 logo. According to many, it seems the hand belongs to an Eridian, thanks to the hidden writings before the logo appeared. While some others speculate on the return of Handsome Jack.

Borderlands 4 – What to expect from the new chapter

In short, the brief teaser has certainly intrigued fans of the series, seeing a potential different artistic direction and even a more serious storyline, without neglecting the classic humoristic and over the top approach of the series. With a release date for 2025, we know that 2K will release the title simultaneously on both the Epic store and Steam, avoiding the mistake made with Borderlands 3. Furthermore, the release only on next-gen systems suggests that Borderlands 4 will indeed use Unreal Engine 5, given the “heaviness” of the game engine. In short, we will have to wait for further news, with something more concrete likely towards the end of 2024. Giving more than enough time to maybe catch up or replay the previous installments!
