Arrowhead Game Studios is already planning its next big game after the massively successful Helldivers 2. The studios’ CCO, John Pilestedt took to X to ask fans what they want from the company’s next game as it looks to the future past the co-op shooter.

Helldivers 2 has been a massive success since its launch last year, with its fast-paced co-op, third-person action a hit with gamers. The game won multiple accolades, including the Better With Friends award at the Steam Awards 2024.

Reflecting on the success of Helldivers 2, Arrowhead Game Studios’ CCO, John Pilestedt, revealed the company is looking to its next game on X and asked fans what they think it could be. Whatever it is, it’s got a big task on its hands to follow Helldivers 2.

Reflecting on Helldivers 2’s Success

It would be impossible to ignore Helldivers 2. It was everywhere in 2024, with anyone into shooters and action games either playing it or being begged by friends to pick it up. Arrowhead’s ability to create immersive co-op play, along with PlayStation’s publishing might, saw the game sell over 12 million units in its first three weeks, becoming PlayStation’s fastest-selling game ever.

Despite its appeal and critical acclaim, Helldivers 2 took a massive hit when PlayStation forced everyone playing it to sign up for PSN, including on PC. Although not the most significant thing in the world, players in over 170 countries couldn’t play. PlayStation quickly reversed the decision for those who had already bought it but continued to force new players to create PSN accounts, leaving many unable to purchase or play the game. Hopefully, lessons have been learned.

The Vision for the Next Big Game

As for where Arrowhead Game Studios does next, Pilestedt has been responding to fans on X, sharing insights into what the company looked at in the past. Responding to one on X, Pilestedt revealed Arrowhead looked at making a game called “Eagles of Democracy,” a sort of on-rails space shooter that could have been co-op.

To another, Pilestedt said the company looked at developing a remake of the 1990 arcade game Smash-TV. So far, he hasn’t said what concept he’s working on, and it could be just about anything. Whether the next title will explore new genres or refine the co-op formula, fans are behind Arrowhead and are already excited.
