Age of Mythology: Retold - Play for FREE This Weekend

Microsoft has announced a surprise, allowing everyone to test Age of Mythology: Retold for free. The remake of the beloved Age of Empires spin-off series. The team mentions a limited Stress Test taking place this weekend. A chance not to be missed but with some things to keep in mind. Ahead of the official launch scheduled for 4 September 2024, and also available on Game Pass since day one.


Age of Mythology: Retold – Stress Test Dates and Availability

The Microsoft team has provided the dates for the Stress Test for Age of Mythology: Retold. An access limited to a maximum of 3 hours each day, available only for Multiplayer and only on Steam. With the following dates and times:

  • Friday, 26 July – from 5:30 am PT (14:30 CEST / 8:30 am ET / 12:30 UTC) to 8:30 am PT (17:30 CEST / 11:30 am ET / 15:30 UTC)
  • Saturday, 27 July – from 5:30 am PT (14:30 CEST / 8:30 am ET / 12:30 UTC) to 8:30 am PT (17:30 CEST / 11:30 am ET / 15:30 UTC)
  • Sunday, 28 July – from 5:30 am PT (14:30 CEST / 8:30 am ET / 12:30 UTC) to 8:30 am PT (17:30 CEST / 11:30 am ET / 15:30 UTC)


How to Participate in the Age of Mythology: Retold Test

Participating in the Age of Mythology: Retold Stress Test is very simple and free for all Steam users:

  • Go to the Steam page for Age of Mythology: Retold
  • Click on Request Access and confirm the request
  • You will receive an email from Steam when you are added to the Playtest.
  • Once accepted to the Tes, you’ll be able to download the game starting from Thursday 25 July, getting ready to play over the weekend.


Content of the Age of Mythology: Retold Stress Test

The game content during the Play Test will be limited to the Multiplayer component. It is uncertain if we will be limited to Skirmish mode or if there will also be a co-op Campaign, as Microsoft’s Play Test information seems to suggest. Another issue is that we’ll likely only have the classic civilizations of Greece, Norse, and Egypt available, with the probable absence of the Chinese – introduced in Tale of the Dragon, the 2016 expansion for the classic game.


AoM Retold: Potential Issues During the Test

The team reminds us of some small issues still present that will appear during the AoM Retold Stress Test. In addition to the classic pathfinding problems recorded during the Closed Beta on 12 July, the Stress Test will have some limited options such as:

  • Lack of Brightness option
  • Localization not available for all languages
  • General pathfinding for Villagers
  • Units will frequently get stuck.

Things to keep in mind that will certainly lead to more constant micromanagement during the Test. Not only for the villagers but also for combat units, risking losing units or having Heroes to fall.
