Project Borealis: Fan-Made Half-Life 2 Episode 3 Prologue Available on Steam
We have Half-Life 3 before GTA 6, kind of. The long-awaited fan-made Half-Life 2: Episode 3, Project Borealis, has a Prologue on Steam. The playable ten-minute Prologue is free to download and gives players a glimpse into Gordon Freeman’s next chapter.
Project Borealis began life in 2017 when developer Icebreaker Industries tried to force Half-Life writer Marc Laidlaw into making Half-Life 2: Episode 3 a reality. After years of silence, in which many thought Project Borealis dead, the developer teased fans again in 2022 when it posted a 10-second video on X of a crowbar lying in the snow, hinting the game was still in development.
Icebreaker Industries’ hard work has resulted in Project Borealis landing on Steam as a free playable demo. The Project Borealis Prologue is only roughly 10 minutes in length. The developer has stayed true to the look and feel of the Half-Life series, delighting fans and exciting the community.
A Faithful Half-Life 2 Sequel
Returning to Ravenholm, Gordon Freeman, in his iconic HEV suit, finds himself coming face-to-face with familiar enemies to unlock the secrets buried in the now snow-covered town. The FPS is developed in Unreal Engine 5, producing incredible visuals and modernizing the Half-Life look.
Icebreaker Industries has taken care to ensure Project Borealis features a “faithful recreation of iconic Half-Life 2 movement and gameplay mechanics.” The Prologue is a standalone experience based on Laidlaw’s now-deleted script. The developer is promising a full Project Borealis game will come at an unspecified date.
How to Download and Experience Project Borealis
Fans can download the Project Borealis Prologue for free from the game’s Steam page. Developed by fans for fans, the Prologue acts as almost a love letter to long-time Half-Life fans and a great introduction for new players to the IP.
It may not be the Half-Life 3 fans want, but the community are more excited than ever for Valve’s upcoming Project White Sands, which many believe could be Half-Life 3. For those wanting more Half-Life content, there is the fan-made Black Mesa and Half-Life: Alyx, the VR game that released for the Valve Index in March 2020.
