Big news from Sega via their financial report as they announce that the Persona series has sold an outstanding 23.5 million copies, unveiling the secret to its success.
The recent SEGA Financial Report, specifically from Sega Sammy Holdings, highlights the company’s performance. The report is 50 pages long and currently unavailable in English, but it dives into SEGA’s IPs from a financial perspective, particularly spotlighting the Persona series.
The series ranks as SEGA’s third most profitable IP with 23.5 million copies sold, following Yakuza/Like a Dragon with 27.7 million and the iconic Sonic with an impressive 1.77 billion sales. Out of the 23.5 million copies of Persona, the Persona 5 series alone sold 10 million, as announced by Atlus in December 2023.

The Persona series has always been highly appreciated by JRPG fans thanks to its intriguing story, enjoyable combat, and elements that boost replayability. Yet, it remained lesser-known outside Japan, until the immense success of Persona 5.
The attractive style and presentation, combined with a story focused on relatable teenage themes, helped its popularity grow. However, the biggest move was opening the series to multiplatform, which allowed for a larger audience and higher profits. SEGA’s new IP, Metaphor: ReFantazio, was also launched on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, achieving 1 million copies sold in just 24 hours.
