Shawn Layden: The Former Sony Interactive CEO Talks About the Future of Gaming

During an interview at Gamescom Asia, which took place in Singapore from 17 to 20 October, Shawn Layden, former CEO of Sony Interactive and now a consultant for the giant Tencent, shared insights on the future of the gaming market and its current state.

In a very interesting interview, Layden summarized that the streamlining of consoles has led to a battle of teraflops. Neglecting the creative side of video games and focusing on graphics, which no longer excite players. The current tactic adopted by Xbox and PlayStation for the latest generation of consoles.

Layden’s Solutions for Revitalizing the Gaming Market

Shawn Layden compares the current situation of the gaming market to the film industry, where original films have become scarce and franchises dominate. The same happens in the gaming industry with classic AAA games, while AA games are disappearing. Layden sees the return of AA games, along with indie titles, as the salvation of the gaming medium.

Layden also shared his thoughts during a live panel at IGN in June 2024, where he stated that with consoles now unified under the same AMD architecture, he would also like to see the end of exclusives, which  divide the gaming community.

The former Sony Interactive CEO certainly has some interesting and partly valid thoughts. However, his speech seems to overlook Nintendo’s approach, which emphasizes creativity over sheer graphics power. Yet, Nintendo owes much of its success to its exclusives and indie alike.

While the PS5 dominated the market in terms of profit in 2023-2024, the Switch sold over one-third of the units, placing it third in the list of best-selling consoles worldwide. With rumors suggesting that the upcoming Switch 2 will feature modest hardware, not following the trend of teraflops, all eyes are already on Nintendo, eagerly awaiting the reveal of its new console, probably by the end of 2024.
