SEGA’s Shinobi is Coming to the Big Screen! See What’s Coming Next

Shinobi, the classic hack-and-slash action game from SEGA, is getting a film adaptation. Sam Hargrave will direct the Shinobi film, and Ken Kobayashi is writing the script. Shinobi is just the latest of a long line of recent video game adaptations.


Shinobi is a classic action series that first launched in arcades in 1987. Following ninja Joe Musashi, the original saw massive success due to its innovative platforming and multi-layered levels. SEGA published the game across multiple platforms, including on its own Master System, before The Revenge of Shinobi released on the SEGA Mega Drive in 1989. The last Shinobi game was Shinobi 3D on the Nintendo 3DS in 2011. A new game for the series was announced at The Game Awards 2023.

Recent successes of video game adaptations, such as The Last of Us, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and SEGA’s Sonic the Hedgehog, have inspired the video game company to try its luck with Shinobi. The hack-and-slash platforming series has spawned fourteen titles and sold roughly 5 million copies worldwide across all platforms, which SEGA believes makes it the perfect choice to turn into a film.

The Shinobi film comes from a partnership with SEGA and Universal with Sam Hargrave chosen as the director. Hargrave directed the Extraction films, featuring Chris Hemsworth, with both films holding top and second spot on Netflix in 90 countries when Extraction 2 released in June 2023. Ken Kobayashi is the writer, coming from Sunny and Marvel’s Hit-Monkey.

Universal and SEGA are yet to reveal any details about the upcoming Shinobi game, but many are excited that Sam Hargrave, known for his action films, is directing. Fans of SEGA’s classic games can look forward to more details, including casting and news on the upcoming Shinobi game in the coming months.
