Kojima appeared at TGS 2024 with a special stage dedicated to Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, the second chapter in the Kojima Production series, coming in 2025 as a PS5 exclusive. Revealing new gameplay, new characters, and what awaits Sam in this new adventure.

With a Special Stage on 29 September 2024, Hideo Kojima appeared to the public at the Tokyo Game Show alongside the Japanese voice actors behind the new characters of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. In a live broadcast of over 1 hour, he and the cast talked about the new characters.

But not only we’ll get introduced to the new characters who will accompany the legendary courier Samuel “Sam” Porter Bridges in his new adventure. New characters include Tarman, Dollman, Tomorrow, and Rainy. But we also see the return of Fragile and Heartman, with a special on-stage appearance by Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, replacing Darren Jacobs in Death Stranding 2 for the role of Heartman.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach – What we know about the new characters of the Drawbridge

The special event revealed 4 new scenes from Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Primarily, Fragile taking us aboard the DHV Magellan, the technological ship and base of operations of the Drawbridge, founded by Fragile. Here we are introduced to Tarman, the ship’s pilot and captain, as well as a doctor and geophysicist. Following him is Dollman, a charismatic member of the Drawbridge mysteriously trapped inside a doll.

In the subsequent sequences, we are introduced to the duo of Tomorrow and Rainy, two new members about whom little is known. As Rainy is expecting a child, and Tomorrow appearing quite confused about it. Heartman returns, now portrayed by Nicolas Winding Refn. Finally, there’s a showcase of the Photo Shoot Event.


Death Stranding 2: On the Beach – the new Photo Shoot Event

The Photo Shoot Event is a seemingly more lighthearted event involving taking pictures in a proper Photoshoot within the game. On this occasion, we see the trio of Fragile, Rainy, and Tomorrow having fun in various poses, in what Kojima refers to as “Girl Time”. All of this is powered by an enhanced version of Guerrilla’s Decima Engine.

The Decima Engine is showcased in the Photo Shoot Event, revealing a wide variety of animations, thanks to motion capture. However, Kojima hinted that the Photo Shoot Event is separate from the Photo Mode, subtly suggesting that “it would be better to take good pictures”. Thus suggesting that the Photo Shoot Event might influence the story. And in classic Kojima style, performing certain actions in the game will lead to a fun sequence with Daichi Miura and Dollman dancing to the song “Horizon Dreamer”.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach – Discover the voices behind the new characters

On stage at the special Death Stranding 2: On the Beach event, accompanying Hideo Kojima were the Japanese voice actors (Seiyū) for the new members of the Drawbridge. These members will join Sam in this new sequel, and we know the respective voice actors for the English dubbing, as well as who the characters are modeled after.

  • Tarman: Played by George Miller and voiced by Marty Rhone (English) and Mitsuru Miyamoto (Japanese)
  • Dollman: Played by Fatih Akin and voiced by Jonathan Roumie (English) and Tomokazu Sugita (Japanese)
  • Tomorrow: Played and voiced in English by Elle Fanning and by Shion Wakayama in Japanese
  • Rainy: Played and voiced entirely by Shioli Kutsuna

With renowned directors like George Miller behind Mad Max, Fatih Akin behind Head-On and The Edge of Heaven, as well as Nicolas Winding Refn behind Drive (2011). And Japanese voice actors of the caliber of Tomokazu Sugita, known for major roles in many anime and games, such as Gintoki in Gintama, Joseph Joestar in JoJo, Katakuri in One Piece, or Ragna the Bloodedge in the Blazblue series or Yusuke Kitagawa in Persona 5.

Also, Shion Wakayama as Takina in Lycoris Recoil, and more recently Momo Ayase in Dandadan or Lemon in Too Many Losing Heroines! While Shioli Kutsuna, a bilingual actress who appeared as Yukio in Deadpool 2 and the recent Deadpool & Wolverine. A star-studded cast of actors and voice actors for the upcoming Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, scheduled for release in 2025.
