Wizard of Legend came out 6 years ago as a small indie game, but now it’s finally getting a sequel: Wizard of Legend 2. Wizard of Legend was developed by Contingent99, an American studio, and published in collaboration with Humble Bundle in May 2018. The game was funded through a Kickstarter campaign in 2016 with the goal of creating a game where you battle enemies as a wizard in dungeons.
Wizard of Legend is known for its fast-paced gameplay. To be more specific, it’s a roguelike dungeon crawler. You use different spells to fight in the game, each with unique abilities. The game can be played solo or in co-op mode with up to four players, making dungeon grinding even more fun.

Each button in the game triggers a different spell, called Arcana. You have your basic attack, your dash, a signature move (extra powerful ability), and one of many standard spells. There are six elements that the Arcana are based on: fire, water, earth, air, light, and chaos. You can unlock and buy these in the game, allowing you to build powerful combos and tailor your playstyle.
On every dungeon floor, except boss levels, you can find three vendors where you can buy new spells that appear randomly. You buy them using currency you find in the dungeon during your run. After completing the game once, you can even choose which spells you start with.
There are also passive upgrades known as Relics, which you can buy in shops to get benefits like more health or stronger spells. You can also buy a new cloak, but that’s only possible with Chaos Gems (currency you unlock after defeating the final boss). Your cloak sets your starting stats, such as health, defense, and damage. You can’t change the robe during the run, but certain NPCs can enhance it.
As mentioned, there are always three shops on each floor. Two have the same vendor selling the spells discussed earlier. The third shop can sell Arcana or Relics, but it can also heal you or buy back items you don’t want. However, some items and trades come with drawbacks, so be careful with your purchases.
The game ends when you beat the dungeon, which isn’t easy. You’ll face three main bosses, each representing one of the elements except Chaos. On the top floor, you’ll encounter a final boss who embodies all six elements, providing a special challenge for you and your friends.
What’s next for the Wizard of Legend franchise? Wizard of Legend 2, of course! This sequel is set to release on October 3rd. The new game is developed by Dead Mage, the studio behind the roguelike Children of Morta, and will be published by Humble Bundle again.
The game has a significantly improved graphics style but maintains a similar gameplay loop. You still play as a wizard, and you can play with up to 4 players (only 2 in Early Access).
