Doom: The Dark Ages has been confirmed for PS5, and Phil Spencer has explained why the sci-fi FPS will not be an Xbox-exclusive title.
Why is Doom: The Dark Ages coming to PS5??
The Xbox Games Showcase for Summer Game Fest 2024 was an impressive event. It included news on the upcoming release date of World of Warcraft: The War Within, an update on Perfect Dark, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 news. But possibly the most exciting reveal was that Doom: The Dark Ages will launch on PS5.
Microsoft is in a strange place at the moment. The powerhouse is currently working on publishing many of its exclusive titles on other platforms as part of Project Latitude, with Halo the latest rumor to be heading to Sony’s PlayStation consoles. Although that being said, some games, like Starfield, will remain Xbox-exclusive titles, making us wonder how Microsoft decides which games to publish on multiple platforms and which to keep to themselves.
Fortunately, we have that answer for Doom: The Dark Ages. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer explained to IGN in an interview that he and Id Software game director Marty Stratton chose a multiple-platform release because “It’s a franchise that I think everyone deserves to play. When I was in a meeting with Marty a couple of years ago, I asked Marty what he wanted to do, and he said he wanted to sell it on all platforms. Simple as that.”
It certainly doesn’t get any simpler than that. Many feared Microsoft would keep many of the big games to themselves when it started acquiring studios and publishers for big money, like Bethesda and Activision Blizzard.
At the moment, though, Microsoft wants to reach as many gamers as possible with their IPs. Therefore we can all look forward to playing Doom: The Dark Ages in 2025 on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
