The Borderlands franchise has gained many new lovers lately. In addition to long-time Borderlands fans, many players are now coming to the franchise who have only heard about the new Borderlands movie. But Borderlands 3 is already five years old. So, naturally, many fans are wondering when a new installment of the main series will finally arrive. And there are new leaks and theories about it. Additionally, Gearbox, the developer behind Borderlands, is being acquired by Take-Two. Does that change anything about the game? Find out all this and more here.
Main Information
Borderlands 4 has been confirmed by Randy Pitchford.
The game is likely to focus on shields and grenades.
Gearbox is being bought by Take-Two for $460 million.
Borderlands 4 Confirmed
Gearbox CEO, Randy Pitchford, implied in an interview that Gearbox is working on a new Borderlands game. He also mentioned that it will be the biggest one the studio has ever made. While this isn’t an official announcement yet, it’s reason enough for most to believe in the development of Borderlands 4.
The main focus of the Borderlands games has always been on the vast array of weapons, allowing for many different playstyles. This will likely be similar in Borderlands 4 as well. But there are many rumors suggesting that the story in Borderlands 4 could revolve around the companies Pangolin and Ashin. The old Borderlands games have often focused on major corporations, so a focus on another company is quite possible. However, these two companies are different from those in previous Borderlands games. These two companies don’t produce weapons; their focus lies on shield and grenade mods. Although this style of combat is quite different from previous installments, it’s not unlikely that Gearbox wants to implement something entirely new into their game.
Shields and Grenades in Borderlands 4
The potential of shields was already demonstrated in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. Vault Hunter Athena used her shield to absorb damage and then return it to herself. Mechanisms like these and many others are conceivable with shields. Currently, there are shields in the games, but they only provide passive effects and are therefore not very popular among players. In Tiny Tina’s Wonderland, there were many melee weapons that were very popular with players. Thus, it’s conceivable that weapons similar to those in Tiny Tina’s Wonderland could be combined with new shields.
While this playstyle would be completely different from previous Borderlands games, it would still fit the franchise. But the combination with new grenades and grenade mods is also very plausible here. So far, only a few Vault Hunters have had the opportunity to use grenade mods. Therefore, it’s quite likely that Gearbox will focus more on developing new grenades and integrating them more into the game.
Take-Two Acquires Gearbox
The Embracer Group, which owns Gearbox, has announced that they are selling Gearbox Software, Gearbox Montreal, Gearbox Studio Quebec, and the franchises Borderlands, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, Homeworld, Risk of Rain, Brothers in Arms, and Duke Nukem to Take-Two. They intend to retain only the rights to Gearbox Publishing San Francisco and the rights to Remnant, Hyper Light Breaker, and other unannounced games. This deal is expected to be completed by the end of June. The $460 million that Take-Two must pay for Gearbox will likely be paid half in cash and the rest in Take-Two shares.
Gearbox will join the 2K studio and continue to be led by Randy Pitchford. Gearbox has been working with the 2K label and Take-Two in general for a long time. For example, 2K was also the publisher of the Borderlands games. Also, for the new Borderlands movie, which is set to release later this year, these two studios have already collaborated.
In recent years, the Embracer Group has been selling more and more of its studios to external parties and has laid off over 900 employees for financial reasons. Unfortunately, this is likely to continue in the future. So, we can be curious about what else will change at the Embracer Group.
