The unwilling hero Fang returns in Fairy Fencer: Refrain Chord, along with his partner Fairy Eryn and the young Tiara with the objective of finding more Furies, the Fairy imbued weapons, in order to revive the Goddess and foil the plans of the revival of the Vile God. Finally available on PC after a month being exclusive on consoles.
After 8 years from the previous title, Dark Advent, the team at Compile Hearts has decided a bold move and shifted the game genre, from a turn based JRPG onto a tactical based grid RPG, akin to the likes of Fire Emblem. Taking a lot of elements typical of the genre, like positioning and terrain in consideration, on top of the returning multi hit moves like Avalanche attacks and Fairize mode, where our Fencer will be able to resonate with their Furies, receiving great boost to their stats. Not only our Fencer will gain experience, but also Furies becoming stronger and unlocking new options for their respective weapons. A new entry in the frachise is the Muse, women able to heal injuries or even brainwash others thanks to the power of their voice, through songs.
There will be returning and iconic gameplay mechanics, like Fairize (the fusion of Furies an Fencer, resulting in a boost in stats), Avalanche attacks (hits able to hit multiple units) and a new addition in Dramatic Resonance, the result of two Muses songs colliding, creating an amplified effect for both buffs and debuffs.
All in all an unexpected change in gameplay, one that doesn’t exactly redefine the genre itself and ends up being more of the same. Moreover as a sequel, while characters are partially reintroduced, it’s sometime hard to understand certain relationship without the context of the previous titles, making it also a hard entry point into the series. Especially if you consider that the game focus mainly on the story, with a very Visual Novel approach to dialogues, including slice of life scene, gags and plenty of humor on top of more serious themes. Price is also a sore note for this title as it sets at 50€, on top of possible future DLC like it happened with Dark Advent (and other Idea Factory titles). For now I’d say to try the previous games as they are cheaper and if you enjoy if for the story you could find yourself justifying this title (hopefully at a lower price by then).
