The Battle of Polytopia has a ton of depth despite starting out very simple. The base game package already includes the 12 regular tribes, and there is an optional DLC adding four special tribes that you can buy if you find yourself enjoying the base game. Having now played The Battle of Polytopia on mobile and Switch, the controller interface needs a bit of work with the cursor when fully zoomed in though.

This is a fun, punchy title that scratches that 4X itch. It may not bring much new to the table, but it clearly designed by veteran developers with a good eye for what makes the genre work. As a simple exercise in strategy, it provides just enough complexity to be worth learning but never takes things too far.

The main issue we have with The Battle of Polytopia is that it’s not ideally played on the Switch, although some effort has gone into making it playable with a controller – but it never feels hugely intuitive, meaning playing handheld via the touchscreen is preferable. Which is not ideal if you are purchasing it as a console experience. Despite this issue, we’d recommend this for any Switch players looking for a new strategy title – it’s well-presented and can be endlessly addictive.
