About this game
Lost in Random is an Action-adventure game with light deck-building aspects developed by Zoink, and Thunderfull the same team behind the critically acclaimed “it takes two”. Once upon a time, in the magical kingdom of random, there lived a queen who possesses the only die left in the kingdom the “black die”. By the Queen’s decree every citizen in the kingdom when they turn 12 rolls a 6-sided die, this will determine their social status and where they will live. You play as a girl named Even living on Onecroft but when your sister Odd turned 12, she managed to roll a 6 although a good thing you can’t help but feel uneasy, a year has passed, and Even has every reason to believe that Odd is in danger. After finding another magical dice, you begin your journey to finding your sister no matter the cost.
- Lost in Randoms’ story is written by award-winning writer Ryan North, he penned a unique world with its own regime, explore 6 twisted realms of the kingdom random with each realm having its own unique set of rules.
- The game’s combat consists of two phases collecting energy from enemies by hitting specific points once you have enough energy, you roll a dice to determine how many cards you can play Weapon, Damage, Defense, Hazard, and Cheat are the 5 main cards types.
- While deckbuilding is not a central mechanic you still need to have a good understanding of how your deck will work practically while in combat, you can only put 15 cards in your main deck the rest will be in your inventory.
- As the game’s title suggests Randomness is a huge mechanic in the game, playing with the hand you dealt with is an important aspect of the game, defy your cursed fate against all odds.
Reviews
Lost in Random isn’t a terribly long game. Even if you do keep the battles long by maintaining normal difficulty you can knock it off in around a dozen hours or so of gameplay time. By that stage, you probably won’t find the combat as charming as you did when you first started, but you’ll still want to see it to its conclusion, because the narrative and humour are so particularly strong.
Digitally Downloaded
Zoink has managed to hit on something original that actually works with Lost in Random. Its audiovisual world-building is tremendous, ably lifting a servicable quest structure and story, and inventive combat plays to its strengths and is taken carefully up to the limits of its potential. However, the layers of interaction during battles make a promise of strategic complexity that isn’t kept, and encounters last too long without the depth to sustain interest.
Nintendo Life
Each time you make some good progress, the game throws in a combat scenario that just takes all the wind out of your sails. It made me actively want to play the game in slower chunks, just not to get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of these combat segments. Lost in Random definitely can hold its own against other titles and feels like a premium experience, but on it’s way there the balance between randomness and thought out design may have gotten a bit lost.
