Developer Hanger 13 announced that they will be making changes to the Mafia Trilogy police mechanics in its first game which is the Mafia: Definitive Edition. The game is scheduled to launch in a couple of months.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is a remake of the original, but that hasn’t stopped Hanger 13 from improving on it, and one of those improvements is the new ability to change the settings of how the police work in the game, allowing players to decide how aggressive they want the police to be, something fans of the original will no doubt like, as the police in the original was thought to be too strict.

That isn’t all that is changing, with Hanger 13 chief creative officer, Haden Blackman, telling Usgamer.net, that repetitive missions in Mafia 3 was a “valid criticism”, and that they put a lot of “emphasis on the missions for Mafia: Definitive Edition” to ensure that missions wouldn’t be too repetitive.

Gunplay has also seen a rework, with gunplay from Mafia 3’s cover-based mechanic moving over into Mafia: Definitive Edition. The difference being that in Mafia 3, Clay is a former soldier, and in Mafia: Definitive Edtion, Tommy is a cab driver, and to reflect that, Blackman says that combat is a “little more lethal”, and “every bullet matters” for Tommy.

Characters have seen their stories expanded upon too, with Tommy’s girlfriend, Sarah, getting more screen time, and Blackman explained that is so that from the beginning of the game “you learn that he’s trying to arrange a way out of the life and he’s doing it for his family”, adding that they “wanted to make sure that as a player you knew what it was he was trying to protect”.

The hope with Mafia: Definitive Edition seems to be that with all the settings available, changes to police mechanics, driving mechanics, added content for characters and stories, that the game will appeal to its hardcore fans, and be enjoyable for newer players to the series.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is set to launch on August 28, 2020, and will be available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The game also comes in the Mafia Trilogy with the two other Mafia games plus DLCs all in definitive edition.
